Enea Gabino is a 28 year-old boy who is desperately looking for sex. Unfortunately, he is on the autism spectrum, which makes his quest particularly long and arduous.

This is the premise of The Special Need, a feature documentary that premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 2013 and went on to win awards in major independent festivals around the world, including a jury award at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

When writing the documentary, we started by spending a lot of time with Enea – a long-time friend of director Carlo Zoratti – his parents and his therapist. We then looked into the options available to Enea in his homeland: Italy. Eventually we embarked on a journey to Northern Europe to try to fulfil his desire. The road trip, both comic and touching, shed light on the need for love that is shared by all humans.
