Role: Executive Editor
Publisher: Fabrica
Year: 2011–2015

COLORS is a quarterly magazine about “the rest of the world”, founded in 1991 by Oliviero Toscani and Tibor Kalman. Every issue takes a single theme and covers it from an international perspective.

I joined as executive editor in 2011, when Patrick Waterhouse took over as creative director. We put together a global team made of writers, researchers, illustrators, designers, photo editors, which over the course of four years delivered ten printed issues – translated into seven languages and distributed worldwide – and a constant flow of online activity, including a blog and a few short documentaries.

The ten issues – informally known as The Survival Guides – tackled the big questions of our times with an accurate storytelling approach. Text and pictures worked together to convey in-depth, often controversial content in an accessible, easy-to-read, at times bizarre approach.

During the four years I spent at COLORS, we received two awards for best editorial design from the Art Directors Club, set up exhibitions and ran lectures and workshops in creative institutions around the world, and were reviewed by the New York Times, the Observer, Creative Review, and It’s Nice That, among others. Our Facebook presence increased tenfold and Jeremy Leslie, founder of magculture, stated: “Recent issues of COLORS have seen the 22-year old magazine become essential reading again”.
