The road trip is an archetype of the American way of life. Asked by fashion brand Blauer to shoot a campaign for them, photographer James Mollison came up with the idea of renting a van, travelling across America and photographing real people in Blauer clothes. I would write a travel journal.

Over the course of four seasons, we travelled across as many states – California, Michigan, Texas, Colorado – and produced the global campaign American Portraits. In the four resulting catalogues, pictures of people we cast in the street are interspersed with landscapes and details.

A mix of interviews, descriptions and inspirational quotes, the copy was conceived to capture the soul of each state and its people.
